Default strange lag/pauses, ping unaffected...

This just started yesterday and continued today.

The game will occasionally pause for a few seconds and then "catch up" by going into warp speed for a few seconds.
It's sounds like it's textbook lag as I understand it, but there are two oddities:

1. I have NEVER had lag before. Ever. I had to ask a guildy what lag looked like yesterday, because I had never seen it before in GW.
2. My ping remains unaffected. The highest it ever gets is into the 200's, even during these strange bits of pauses/lag that I've been getting the last 2 days.

Just 20 minutes ago, while testing something at Battle Isle, the game paused on me for about 3 seconds or so, but my ping stayed put in the low 100's the entire time before, during, and after the pause (fps @ constant 60).
This has been happening quite frequently too, I'd say at least once every 10 to 15 minutes, regardless of where I am.

What the hell is going on here?
How can I be "lagging" if my ping is still strong?

Something may be accessing your hard drive. Virus scanner, spyware scanner, backup maybe?

the samething happened to me yesterday as well, I was in a team of 8 players doing GOA quests when suddenly EVERYONE in the team got a lag spike and we all got killed. Sounds exactly as you described, we all paused and then suddenly we moved super fast and died from enemy mobs. Everyone in the group said they experieced the lag, not just me. This leads to the conclusion that the problem is with Anets servers, not the users.

Nope, I made absolute sure I have nothing running in the background.

To add on to what I previously said, every now and then when this happens I now see the ping spike to over 1000, but most of the time when it happens I see absolutely no change in the ping (which is usually somewhere between 50 and 300)

Ping is only done every 5 or so seconds. Sometimes, it does not ping while this lag occurs, other times it will (explaining the 1000+ pings). This definitely describes itself as a network problem.

Strange lags and pauses happening here to

Was fighting charr north of wall in pre and they were jumping all over the place. Connection dot was green and my movements were fine but the charr would suddenly jump half way across the map.

Your ping does not necessarily determine your connection speed or reliability, all a ping does is verify that another device is online and sending a reply to your request.

As said above, there are a number of problems that can cause lag on your computer. Usually its because of something hard drive related.

Check event log:
control panel > administrative tools > event viewer > check all three categories for errors and post them.

Because you've never had lag before, I would cal it a temporary problem that could be due to your isp. Wait a good day or so before you change anything drastic.

Your type of connection? (wired or wireless)

Rubberbanding. Lag.
If you've never had this before, consider if you may have installed something which accesses the internet - applications going online and downloading/uploading stuff will cause lag.

The ping the game reports is an average, sampled every five seconds: it's likely to miss brief lag-spikes, and to underestimate those it catches.

Another possibility is that it was server lag, e.g. if the administrator did something funky to it while you were out questing.

Guild Leader & I are getting this also. And we did nothing new to our stuff. And it has started since Wintersday Event. It's a strange lag, Ping stays our normal but then it'll stop then shoot us up like a slingshot. But for like the next 3 - 5 minutes it'll like studder, Things wont walk, They'll take and skip forward instead. And it's not our systems for lagging on hardware. Intel Quad Core/2 Gigs of Dual Channel Ram/Twin 500g Sata 3.0 HDD's all 3 months old.

Done and done. The hard drive is definitely not the problem.

Yeah, looks like there are quite a few people having this problem since the end of the Wintersday event.
There's a thread about this over at the Riverside Inn. I'd post a link but I can't seem to find that damn thing at the moment.

I'm getting this really irritating sticky, rubberbanding sort of laggyness too. I don't think it's my computer and my ISP never has issues. I can browse websites and download stuff without interruptions.

Yup, it's only GW for me too. I play a crap-ton of other online games and they're all unchanged.
Definitely sounds like an ANet server issue.

Been getting the lag also, and it's irritating as you can be right in the middle of something and then just pause for no reason. Not even able to do a thing then it comes back all of a sudden. Happens quite a lot over the last week or so. More noticable when on NF lands of late. Never have lag issues usually at all.
